World Ocean Day 2021

Protecting 30% of our blue planet for a healthy ocean and climate

World Ocean Day belongs to all groups, collectively everywhere.  We look forward to collaborating with you in 2021, and beyond, to help create a healthy ocean, a healthy climate, and a better future – together!

World Ocean Day helps unite the world to safeguard our blue planet home, with its shared ocean and climate. For 2021, Conservation Action Focus focuses on protecting 30% of our blue planet for a healthy ocean and climate. By having the thousands of organizations worldwide integrate this action focus into their activities, the World Ocean Day community will  support the growing movement worldwide to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030 (“30×30”). A healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate crisis, and by supporting 30×30, we can protect our planet’s life support systems – specifically the interconnected issues of ocean, climate, and biodiversity.

Decisions about the future of our blue planet are being made this year by world leaders, and they need to hear from you and your organization! The actions that our leaders take (or fail to take) this year will determine the health of our blue planet and security of future generations for decades to come.   Join the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council, and the growing youth movement for our blue planet, and get involved this year!

We hope your zoo, aquarium, museum, or other type of organization will incorporate the action focus into whatever type of activity, event, or celebration you plan for June, and/or anytime! Whether you organize a beach or city cleanup, a river restoration project, or a sustainable seafood event, you can involve your participants by having them sign the petition to world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet – the lands, fresh waters and ocean – by 2030.

And while 8 June is the singular special day, it’s really about involvement in action for our shared ocean throughout the year. Remember that with every other breath you take, the oxygen you breathe comes from plants in the ocean. Every day the ocean is working for you, and we can do something to help support the ocean and its life.

To paraphrase U.S. President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what our ocean can do for you, but what you can do for our ocean.”

Thank you for your involvement and we look forward to growing our collaboration with you and others throughout 2021 and beyond!
