The World Unites On June 8 For World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day 2017 will be the biggest and best yet! For 2017, hundreds of celebrations are planned in over 100 countries – from the United Nations Oceans Conference being centered around World Oceans Day in New York, to the Bahria University in Pakistan holding events across their campus, to the Council of the Haida Nation and Gwaii Haanas seeking youth and other submissions for ocean-themed photographs, poetry and short stories for this year’s Tang.Gwan Siiwaay Sii.ngaay Oceans Day in Canada.

The Youth Advisory Council has been active in developing the social media campaign for World Oceans Day 2017.  New resources and tools were also developed in multiple languages for everyone to use, as they wish, in their events and activities to recognize the importance of the ocean in each of our lives, no matter where we live.

This year we celebrate our ocean connections and the importance of engaging youth, under the theme Our Oceans, Our Future. Within that broader theme, the main conservation action thrust focuses on preventing plastic pollution in the ocean and encouraging solutions for a healthier ocean and a better future. We’ve been teaming up with UN Environment, to launch an online exhibition that will help educate and engage people around the world, not only for World Oceans Day, but year-round. World Oceans Day rallies the world around June 8, and then all of us can take that enthusiasm and help people continue to help with solutions to the many problems facing our ocean, and society, throughout the entire year.
