Singapore - World Ocean Day 2009
One°15 Marina, Singapore (June 7th, 2009)

For the Ocean day 2009, Infinity Sea Tribe is welcoming people on board to present their project and interact with local people. We will put emphasis on the questions of climate change and its impacts on the natural and human environment of the Pacific region. Activities are organised with children to raise awerness about global warming and to show opportunities of eco-actions. To conclude, an exhibition-show "Pacific Exotica" will be presented.

The Infinity Sea Tribe is a group of 18 international crew members sailing on Infinity, a 120 ft sailing vessel currently embarking upon a 3 year expedition. As sailors circumnavigating the Pacific Ocean, we witness first hand the beauty and fragility of the islands, the devastation of water pollution, over-fishing, coral reef declination and most alarmingly, the impact of climate change.

Sri-Lanka - Organize Awareness Campaign on Marine Pollution Prevention
Colombo, Sri-Lanka (June 8th, 2009)

The coastal waters of Sri-Lanka are exposed to various types of pollutants. These sources release high amount of pollutants in to the sea daily. The pollution produces various environmental and socioeconomic problems. Some of the major pollution is due to: Industrial waste, Agriculture (Pesticides and fertilizers are used extensively in Sri Lanka. Run-off with agrochemicals drains into rivers, estuaries, lagoons and eventually into the ocean), Domestic waste, and Aquaculture and Oil pollution (as a consequence of the international shipping routes to the south of Sri Lanka, the country's coastal waters are exposed to oil pollution from the heavy maritime traffic in the area). Ballistic water is causing environmental imbalance due to the introduction of invasive species and Diseases Degradation of Natural Habitats, Salinisation, Coastal Erosion, over fishing and Destructive Fishing Practices — not to mention unregulated Tourism. The Sri Lanka Nature Forum (SLNF) with collaboration of (MPPA) Marine Pollution Prevention Authority and (CEA) Central Environmental Authority will organize Awareness campaign on Marine Pollution Prevention in Colombo on the 8th of June 2009.

Greenland - Aasivk Fire & Ice 2009
near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland (July 17-19, 2009)

Event Overview The world will witness an epoch making event at the ice caps 40 kilometers from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland from July 17th to July 19th, 2009. There is no place where evidence of climate change is more visible than at this site where water is gushing through the ice caps forming lakes on top. This event will provide a forum for: ! Fulfillment of a Prophecy: This prophecy states that “when the world needs it most, the sacred fire will return to Greenland.” With the trees now growing in the shadow of the ice cap, the sacred fire from North American tribal nations will be brought to Greenland to fulfill this prophecy. ! Weaving together Spirit and Science: The current thrust of most climate change conferences, policies and programs deal with the political and technological possibilities of mitigating climate change. The aim of this conference and its ceremonies is to address the spiritual dimensions of climate change – what impact does climate change have on Humanity and how do we begin to address them using spirit and science. ! Ancient Wisdom: The modern world has largely lost its connection with the natural world. The Indigenous Elders still carry the wisdom that is much needed now to assist in restoring Earth’s balance. The outcome of the event will be: ! A call to action for the world to address the one of the biggest challenges facing Humankind using both science and spirit. We have a lot of knowledge but we have yet to learn how to use it wisely. ! An online classroom with educational modules from dialogue between Elders, scientists, world leaders, environmentalists. ! A permanent site for study and ceremony at Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. ! A documentary film.

Ireland - World Oceans Day
North Co. Dublin, Ireland (June 8th, 2009)

For World Oceans Day, June 8th, The Irish Seal Sanctuary is proud to participate in worldwide celebrations for World Oceans Day on the 8th of June. World Oceans Day is an opportunity to celebrate our personal connection to the marine environment and to marine wildlife.

To celebrate the day, the Irish Seal Sanctuary will host a beach clean-up on Blackrock beach and King's beach beside the Martello Tower in Balbriggan, North Co. Dublin, and in the evening, there will be a series of talks and slideshows with live ocean theme music in the Séamus Ennis Cultural Centre, The Naul, North Co. Dublin.

Staff from Google Ireland will join Irish Seal Sanctuary volunteers for a beach clean-up from 11am to highlight the problem of marine debris for marine wildlife. Fish, birds and mammals ingest plastic; whales ingest smaller pieces of plastic with krill which is their staple diet while sea turtles and dolphins ingest plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. Seals and other marine mammals become entangled by marine debris such as fishing line and fragments of trawl netting, and the plastic ring-holders for six-packs of beer are lethal to seabirds.

At 7pm on World Oceans Day, there will be short talks and slideshows organized by the Irish Seal Sanctuary in the Séamus Ennis Cultural Centre, The Naul, North Co. Dublin. ISS Education Officer Sarah Fields will introduce talks and slideshows on oiled marine wildlife by Pauline Beades from the ISS Oil Spill Advisory group, on sustainable fisheries by John Woodlock of the ISS Fisheries Advisory Group and on seal legends and folklore by Bairbre Ní Fhloinn, UCD Folklore Department. There will also be live music with an ocean theme throughout the evening. For more information or to book a place, please e-mail: roneditor@gmail.com or phone 086 1775478.

Adm: €10.00
Members of the Irish Seal Sanctuary: €5.00 Places are limited; please book early to avoid disappointment.

Doors Open: 6.30pm Commences At: 7.00pm

Netherlands - Rotterdam World Ocean Day
(June 8th, 2009)

Monday 8 June is World Ocean Day! All over the world scientists, politicians, policy makers, managers, students and the general public will get together to devote their attention to the largest body of water on our planet: the ocean. The ocean is vital to our daily lives, and it is equally vital to use our marine resources in a sustainable way. The world's ocean is in an alarming condition: it has never deteriorated so much and so quickly as in the last five years. Fish populations are falling sharply; coral reefs are dying; and pollution continues to threaten marine life. The health of the ocean affects our planetary environment, as it does our own immediate environments. We take more from the ocean than the ocean can cope with. The ocean provides us with the air that we breathe, with food, and supports our economy. We must therefore protect it now if we want to survive in the long term. Rotterdam World Ocean Day is an initiative of Erasmus University Rotterdam and Technical University Delft. Together they hope to make an appeal for action on behalf of the World Ocean.

During a one day conference in the Oceanium of Rotterdam Zoo, experts from all over the world will discuss overfishing, illegal fishing and bycatch, fishing subsidies, aquaculture and alternatives for fish, Marine Protected Areas, improved fishing methods and technical innovations, etc.

During this top level expert meeting, we will assess the past, present and future condition of our Oceans, in order to call for a joint effort to realize a sustainable exploitation of our Oceans, now, for all parties involved.

This conference is meant for international media, politicians and scientists.

In the late afternoon the premiére of the renowned film The End of the Line based on the book by Dr. Charles Clover, will be held, with an introduction by the author himself. This film will be launched worldwide on World Ocean Day.

In the evening a major event will be held in the auditorium of Erasmus University Rotterdam for the general public. In the aula, which accommodates 1,000 people, inspirational individuals associated with our ocean will take the stage: Fabien Cousteau (oceanographer and grandson of the legendary Jacques Cousteau), Captain Paul Watson (founder of Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace), David Doubilet (underwater photographer National Geographic) and Professor Dr. Michael Braungart (Cradle-to-Cradle) will share their visions regarding the ocean and in particular the opportunities it affords humanity and the entire planetary ecosystem.

Canada - Hidden Sites - Contemporary Art Exhibition
Richmond, BC Canada (May 28 - July 12, 2009)

Hidden Sites, links two B.C. sites that are significant yet 'hidden' to most British Columbians, Cache Creek and the Broughton Archipelago. A video installation condenses the 6 hour journey a garbage truck makes from Vancouver to the Cache Creek Landfill, following essentially the same route as the major Fraser River salmon migrations. The video and selected digital prints link the migration of salmon to the Broughton Archipelago, an area of intense aquaculture on the BC mainland coast. Zeigler is currently producing a series of digital prints and a video installation confronting issues of ecological degradation in British Columbia marine habitats. Portions of this work specifically focus on fish farming off the coast of British Columbia, and on the Fraser River Basin.

Barbara Zeigler is an artist, Associate Professor, and Supervisor of the UBC Printmedia Research Centre of the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. She received her BFA in Painting and her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Illinois. Additionally, she studied in Munich, Germany at the Akademie der bildenden Künste and the Universität München. In Canada she has also taught at the University of Alberta, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Queen's University, and in the USA at the University of Illinois.

Canada - Creatures of the Abyss Traveling Exhibit
Sudbury, Ontario, Canada (05/22/2009 - 01/03/2010)

Creatures of the Abyss is a 6000 sq. ft traveling exhibit that will open at Science North (Canada's 2nd largest science center) on May 22, 2009. This hands-on exhibit will allow visitors to 'descend' to the deepest parts of the oceans. People of all ages will discover the extraordinary, mysterious, and downright strange creatures of the deep. Imagine yourself entangled in the tentacles of a life-sized animatronic model of a colossal squid — the largest known species of squid! The Bioluminescence Theater allows guests to find out how the creatures of the abyss produce fantastic-coloured light shows to see and communicate in complete darkness! Hitch a virtual ride inside Alvin, the world's first deep-ocean submersible vehicle. Catch the spirit of exploration and travel alongside scientists as they discover fascinating new creatures of the abyss.

Our science team has been hard at work with three organizations to ensure that the latest and most exciting science is communicated in the exhibit. These teams include the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and Duke University.

The exhibit will open at Science North in Sudbury, Ontario Canada on May 22, 2009 and will begin a 5-year North American Tour in January 2010.

Costa Rica - Celebrating the whales arriving in Liberia, Costa Rica.
Liberia, Guancaste, Costa Rica (June 7-8, 2009)

No, they are not coming on a cargo airship through the Oduber Airport!

Marine Artist Carlos Hiller will be painting these magnificent mammals, life size, with the help of 100 kids from Barrio La Cruz (Liberia) school, which will be creating a huge colorful school of fish: each kid will paint a fish. A humpback whale of 14 mts long and her 4mts calf will be part of the Liberia landscape, being ambassadors to participate on the World Ocean Day, next June 8th.

The wall selected is next to Jumbo Perimercados Supermarket, in Plaza Santa Rosa, Liberia. Coordinated by Marina y Península Papagayo, kids will be conducted by groups and after painting their own fish, they will receive a motivational speech with the idea of creating environmental leaders. We want to leave them with good memories and a special message about what each and all of us can do, to protect our oceans.

This activity is open to everybody, and if you want to bring your kids, to paint their own fish, you are all more than welcome!

We hope to see you there!

USA - Alaska Ocean Festival
Anchorage, Alaska (03/30/09 - 03/30/09)

Last year's festival was a huge success and this year's 7th Ocean Festival will be even bigger and better! The primary focus of the festival is to educate the public and raise awareness about the importance of healthy oceans and to celebrate the bounty of Alaska's many marine resources. With nearly half of the total state population living in Anchorage, the festival presents a unique opportunity to bring Alaskans together to celebrate the uniqueness of our oceans and the significance they have in our lives.

Musicians, speakers, artists, fishermen, ocean recreationalists, and ocean conservation groups converge in beautiful downtown Anchorage to spend a day celebrating our Alaskan connections to the ocean. Food vendors, a beer garden, the Seafood Olympics, a foot race, and the "Bucking Salmon" are just a few of the attractions that make the Alaska Oceans Festival one of Anchorage's favorite summer events.

USA - Beach Trash Analysis
Carlsbad, California (03/01/2009 - 05/28/2009)

Our first graders at Jefferson Elementary School in Carlsbad, California will be studying saltwater ecosystems for three months. The goal is to learn about the ocean. If they learn about it they will love it, and if they love it they will take care of it. They will be sorting beach trash as one of their action projects. The children will analyze it and figure where it is coming from. Last year, they were very surprised to find all the party balloons that had drifted to the beach. Many of our students decided not to ask for helium balloons for their birthday party. Finally, they will propose solutions to the beach trash problems. At Open House Night, they will tour the classrooms with their parents sharing what they have learned. Then, they will show their parents the beach trash collection and ask their parents to sign a pledge to help keep our beaches free of trash.

USA - Rubio's Restuarants, Inc. - RSC Beach Adoption
Carlsbad, California, USA (June 5th, 2009)

Since much of Rubio's Beach Mex menu includes seafood, we are greatly dependent upon a healthy ocean. Ironically, plastic bags and take-out containers make up a large portion of marine debris so we'd like to set up a program that involves Rubio's being a better friend to the ocean. In addition to trying to source more eco-friendly packaging options, we'd like to establish a program of coastal clean up to reduce the marine debris that threatens the ocean wildlife upon which we are so dependent. In honor of World Oceans Day, Rubio's headquarters in Carlsbad adopted South Carlsbad State Beach – South Ponto. We will spend Friday afternoon cleaning this beach for Ocean Day. Once we have established the program at our headquarters we hope to expand the Adopt-A-Beach initiative to our restaurants.

Carlsbad, CA (June 7th, 2009)

SEA LIFE Aquarium is celebrating the first-ever official World Oceans Day a little early this Sunday, June 7 with story telling, crafts and the new Sharks Revealed exhibit which just opened on May 29. SEA LIFE educators will be teaching guests about the “Wear Blue and Tell Two” campaign, an international campaign by The Ocean Project encouraging ocean lovers to wear blue on June 8, which is the official World Oceans Day, and to tell people two things they may not know about the ocean and how they can help. Wear Blue and Tell Two is the theme for craft project in the Aquarium’s Southern California Touch Pool area all day long. The exhibit also features a graphic timeline showing the evolution of sharks; an interactive "shark lab" where guests can get hands-on experience with shark teeth, jaws and other artifacts and a large-scale model of a “mermaid’s purse” for a fun photo opportunity. SEA LIFE Aquarium celebrates the World’s oceans every day through more than 36 displays including the Shoaling Ring, where guests are surrounded 360 degrees by schools of swimming fish; and the Ray Lagoon where several species of rays appear to “fly” through the water in Mayan temple ruins and the Discovery Zone where new additions include a interactive features such as the trash timeline, wall of promises, an underwater parks building project, and a save the whales display where guests can actually send a postcard to President Obama encouraging legislation to stop whaling.

Red Barn Classroom - Point Reyes National Seashore
Free and open to the public

Film descriptions:

CORDELL BANK: BLUE WATER OASIS
Take the plunge and explore Cordell Bank National Marine sanctuary, an undersea island of granite towers and reefs just off Bodega Head. Cold water and strong currents may challenge human visitors, but create ideal conditions for wildlife from whales to albatross. The bank teems with jewel-like fish, anemones and some very curious-looking creatures. (14 min)

COOL WATER HAVEN
Not only people come to San Francisco for great seafood. Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary is San Francisco's amazing aquatic "backyard," an oceanic cornucopia to satisfy even the hungriest — including great white sharks, giant blue whales, and a quarter-million seabirds. (18 min)

A SHELTERED SEA
Against a backdrop of the breathtakingly beautiful California coast, this film recounts the California Marine Life Protection Act, our country's first and most ambitious plan to protect a network of ocean areas of special bounty and diversity. Overfishing, pollution and climate change have brought us to the tipping-point; only swift and bold action can save it now. (23 min)

USA - COARE Fundraiser Celebrating World Ocean Day
San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA (June 6th, 2009)

The concept for World Ocean Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and has been celebrated unofficially every year since.

This past December, the United Nations made it official, and June 8th is now officially known as World Oceans Day.

Join us for our third year and for the inaugural celebration of the newest holiday recognizing the oceans that cover nearly 3/4 of our planet.

Come to Periscope Cellars in Emeryville on Saturday, June 6th from 6-9pm, and enjoy wine, light finger foods, live music, and a special screening of the film Sharkwater.

General admission is only $20 ($25 at the door), and tickets are limited.

USA - World Ocean Day 2009 — Party with A Sea Change
California, USA (June 8th, 2009)

The problem of ocean acidification is global.

That's why we want to spark awareness of the issue with a series of international events on World Ocean Day 2009, June 8.

As an anchor event we invite you to screen A Sea Change. Maybe you'd like to use the opportunity to raise awareness around your own ocean- or climate-change related issue. Or simply screen the film as a stand-alone event. Perhaps you'd like to present a panel discussion afterward, including scientists and other experts from your own region. Other possible events could be a weekend of ocean-related activities for all ages. Or a webcast linking celebrations across the globe. Maybe a flotilla in your local harbor.

Already on board are our partners Sailors for the Sea. We'll be screening the film with them in Boston, building other local events around the screening.

We're hoping that related events will take place on every continent, and that these events can be linked via the Internet. Ocean acidification is an international concern. We need to work together to solve it.

USA - Friends of Jupiter Beach Monthly Beach Cleanup
Jupiter, Florida Palm Beach County (June 6th, 2009)

The Friends of Jupiter Beach invite everyone to join in the volunteer beach cleanup on Saturday, June 6 from 8:00am-10:00am. This event is sponsored by the North Palm Beach Yacht Club. Volunteers and members are celebrating the FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY of the launch of FJB to keep Jupiter Beach clean and dog-friendly.

Volunteers arrive at 8:00am at the Anita Lankler Pavilion in Ocean Cay Park east of US Hwy 1 and Marcinski Road (north Palm Beach County), divide into teams to clean 2 1/2 miles of beach, sidewalks, and park grounds, then regroup at 9:30 am for light continental breakfast and beverages, a brief program and "thanks for coming" door prizes including tickets to upcoming Dog Days Baseball Games at Roger Dean Stadium. Community services hours are awarded. All volunteers are welcome and advance registration is not required for individuals, but organized groups are requested to call 561-748-8140 to register in advance.

Beach cleanups are "shine only", so call 561-748-8140 for a "cancel" message (by 7:00am that morning) if weather is questionable. Volunteers are encouraged to bring recycled shopping bags for use in cleanup efforts, garden gloves, sunscreen and bug spray. Closed-toe shoes are required. Since September 2006, Friends of Jupiter Beach have been tracking the weight of garbage and recyclables removed from Jupiter Beach at monthly cleanups, for a total exceeding 18,000 pounds of trash removed since September 06 . More than 8,000 pounds of recyclables have been separated and transferred voluntarily by Rapid Removal, a Palm Beach Gardens firm. Previously, the number of garbage bags collected were recorded, but the change was made to so that observers could fully comprehend the extent of the garbage problem at the beach and, more importantly, the tremendous benefit to the beach, dunes and ocean environment provided by Friends of Jupiter Beach. The offer by Rapid Removal, in fall of 2006, to collect the separated recyclables following each cleanup has resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in the amount of garbage going to landfill. The cumulative weight of garbage removed during 15 years of FJB cleanups is incalculable....and when combined with the continual trash pick up members do during their own visits to the beach, the impact Friends of Jupiter Beach has had on our community is significant! Friends of Jupiter Beach became a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 volunteer organization in 1994, dedicated to organizing monthly beach cleanups, providing free "dog bags" at the beach, preserving dog-friendly beach privileges, and enhancing our beach and marine environment through education and community service... along a 2 1/2 mile stretch of historically dog-friendly shoreline. The following beach cleanup will be Saturday, July 4 sponsored by J. R. Kaumeier. USA - Beach Watcher Volunteer Orientation
Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (June 6th, 2009)

Are you looking for an excuse to hang out on the beach? Enjoy people watching? Do you care about protecting Hawaii's beaches and reefs? If so, celebrate World Ocean Day by joining Reef Watch Waikiki's volunteer team! This is your chance to join an effort to help restore the health of Mamala Bay, learn more about the natural and cultural history of Waikiki, and meet like-minded people from your community dedicated to responsible use of marine resources.

As a Beach Watcher, you will conduct human use surveys and interact with beach-goers as you monitor one of ten zones that collectively span the length of the Waikiki coastline. Each one-hour survey will assess the types of human activities and environmental threats present in the water and on the beach within your selected survey zone. Essentially, you will be counting and recording what people are doing on the beach and in the water. The data collected will be compiled into our Human Use Monitoring Program database, and over time, will create a clearer picture of how human behavior is affecting Waikiki. This information will guide future efforts to improve the health and vitality of Waikiki's natural resources through marine education programs, stewardship projects, and outreach to area businesses and other user groups to become better stewards of the bay's beaches and reefs. Our next volunteer information and orientation session is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 from 9:00-11:00am. Meeting will be held in Waikiki, details provided upon registration.

USA - Free Ocean Discovery Cruises
Maalaea, HI, USA (June 6th, 2009)

Pacific Whale Foundation will be offering free one-hour ocean discovery cruises to Pacific Whale Foundation Members on Saturday, June 6 in honor of World Ocean Day.

Hawaii residents with a valid i.d. are also invited to participate in the free cruises.

"We are joining in with hundreds of communities around the globe who are celebrating World Ocean Day," says Brooke Porter, Conservation Director at Pacific Whale Foundation.

Ocean Day was established during the Rio De Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 to raise awareness of the important connection between people and the ocean. A resolution by the United Nations in 2008 established that June 8 would be designated as World Ocean Day.

Pacific Whale Foundation's celebration of World Ocean Day will take place on Saturday, June 6, to make it possible for working people to participate.

"We will be giving away up to 1,000 free tickets for our Ocean Discovery Cruises in celebration of World Ocean Day," says Greg Kaufman, President and Founder of Pacific Whale Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting whales, dolphins and the ocean environment. “These Ocean Discovery Cruises depart from Lahaina and Maalaea throughout the day, and offer the opportunity to get out on the water, to enjoy the beautiful views of Maui and the neighbor islands, and possibly to encounter some marine wildlife, including dolphins and sea turtles.”

"Our Certified Marine Naturalists will be onboard, to talk with passengers about our planet's oceans and the critical importance of the ocean in sustaining life on earth," says Kaufman, "We'll also be discussing ways in which we can all take steps to protect the ocean environment."

Guests on Pacific Whale Foundation's Ocean Discovery Cruises will be able to view "Green Feature" signs on the vessel that point out steps that Pacific Whale Foundation takes to protect the marine environment every day. For example, Pacific Whale Foundation uses biodegradable and compostable cups, plates, bags and utensils on its vessels, and offers free applications of reef-safe sunscreen to its snorkeling guests. A complete list of Pacific Whale Foundation's eco-friendly features can be found by clicking here.

Departure times for the one hour cruises are:

From Maalaea: 12:30 pm; 1 pm, 2 pm and 2:30 pm

From Lahaina: 2 pm and 3:30 pm

Reservations are required for the free Ocean Discovery Cruises and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To obtain your reservation, please call (808) 249-8811 ext. 1.

Pacific Whale Foundation members simply need to provide their name to be eligible for the free cruises.

Adults will need a valid Hawaii Driver's license or photo i.d. showing proof of residency to check-in for the free cruise. No i.d. will be required for children.

USA - A Sea Change: Screenings on 3 continents
Beacon, NY, USA (June 5-8, 2009)

The problem of ocean acidification is global — that's why Niijii Films and the Beacon Institute in New York are joining forces with organizations across the world to screen A Sea Change for World Ocean Day (WOD).

A Sea Change is the first documentary on ocean acidification, the wet underbelly of climate change. Imagine a world without fish: if ocean chemistry continues to change because of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a bottom-up collapse of the sea food chain could result. The film combines the intimate story of Norwegian family whose life is bound up with the sea with an investigation into the science of ocean acidification.

"A Sea Change could not be more timely. I believe acidification of our oceans is actually a greater threat to our survival than is temperature or sea level rise, the conventional 'global warming' threats. Acidification is confusing and difficult to even imagine for most people — we need your film."

World Ocean Day screenings of the film are taking place in Australia, Europe, North America, and the Hawaiian Islands. Linking the screenings will be a live webcast panel emanating from the Beacon Institute in Beacon, NY.

People for Puget Sound works to preserve the rich diversity of marine life, such as salmon, Orcas, sea lions, and numerous water fowl, found in this unique ecosystem.

"This film is both a love letter to the planet and an urgent plea to its citizens." - San Francisco Chronicle

In its way they will have to face Mboé, the goddess of the deceits, an unscrupulous industrialist, a voracious oil slick and an insurmountable sweepings sea.

This theater work puts the emphasis in humor and the adventure to draw attention of great children and about the dangers of the irrational use of natural resources, of the consumption without limits, the uncontrolled fishing and the conformism spirit that teaches to us that “nothing we can make to change the things”. It does not remain in the simple denunciation, but it looks for to investigate the causes of these problems and to offer solutions without betraying the primary objective of the work, that is to count a good history, funny, intelligent and exciting.

Law of the Sea campaign on World Oceans Day
everywhere (June 8th, 2009)

The first annual World Oceans Day is approaching on June 8th. What better time to act to protect the earth's waters and promote peace, security, and sustainability? The Law of the Sea, a widely-supported treaty known as the constitution for the world's oceans, needs priority status from the White House before it will be brought to the Senate floor. We need your help to make it happen.

1. CALL-IN: Call the Whitehouse comment line at 202.456.1111 before 5 pm Eastern on June 8th. The line is manned by operators, to whom you will relay the following message, and there is no answering machine capability after 5 pm, so you must call during the day.

Suggested comment script:

"President Obama, in honor of the first annual World Oceans Day I'm asking you to take the lead on getting the Convention on the Law of the Sea ratified before Congress goes home for the summer. Though the votes are there, it is unlikely that the Senate will adopt any major treaty without Presidential leadership. This treaty has broad bipartisan support and will help protect marine life, keep our ships safe in international waters, and boost our economy.

Mr. President, please steer the Law of the Sea towards ratification and show your commitment to working cooperatively with the international community by speaking out about this important treaty today. Thank you."

2. CLICK TO SEND AN EMAIL: Click here to send an email to President Obama any time on June 8th.
