Featured Ocean Images

  • Wolcott Henry
    Wolcott Henry is the photographer behind all images featured on the Seas the Day calendar and website. Among many other things, he is also a contract photographer for the National Geographic Society. Wolcott has been a professional underwater photographer for nearly a decade and spends considerable time both above and underwater shooting examples of the wonderful diversity of life, as well as the human impacts on the ocean and coral reefs in particular.

  • The National Biological Information Infrastructure Digital Image Library
    A growing library of diverse, well-documented images (30,000 and counting) of nature and the environment. The library links images to detailed information about the featured species, habitat, etc. Contributed by photographers and organizations, most images are freely available for use.

  • EcoLibrary
    Through EcoLibrary you can freely use rich images that have been proven to be useful in helping people of all ages learn about the environment, conservation, and ecology. EcoLibrary currently contains several hundred annotated photographs that illustrate key concepts. As the site grows maps, sounds, panoramas, and interactive exercises will be added.

  • ARKive
    ARKive hails itself as the "Noah's Ark for the Internet era" - the world's centralised digital library of films, photographs and associated recordings of species. For each species, ARKive is digitizing footage, stills, and sound recordings to compile a complete profile of the species' characteristic behavior and appearance.

  • Marine Photo Bank
    This site allows photographers to donate their marine photos for use by non-profit environmental organizations. The site has several categories of photographs, most of which focus on human impacts on the oceans.

  • NASA Space Shuttle Earth Observations Photography Database
    This database contains over 400,000 images acquired by astronauts, including coastal areas, water habitats, geographic regions, etc. Each image is available in three resolutions and includes a cataloguing data and a caption.

  • National Marine Sanctuaries Media Library
    This new online multimedia library offers public access to thousands of high-resolution, ocean-related photos and videos taken by NOAA scientists, educators, divers and archaeologists. The comprehensive database is fully searchable by keyword, category and location, and all the images are tagged with relevant information including resolution and usage rights.

  • The NOAA Photo Library collection features a broad range of high-resolution images spanning continents and centuries, including storms, coastal scenes, marine life, and space images.

  • Photovalet
    This extensive database includes dozens of striking photographs of coral, but you can also search for photographs of other marine life.
