ACTION TIPS JANUARY 2008
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

January 2008

Welcome the New Year with a new way to help our ocean!

No matter where we live, we are connected to the ocean, from the water we use and the air we breathe to the seafood some of us may eat, as well as for commerce and recreation. Each of us can learn and do more to conserve our shared world ocean and its resources for future generations.

There are many ways you can "be the change you wish to see" for our ocean planet - try starting with these today:

  Three for me...

  1. Get Informed! The more you know about your connection to our "blue backyard", the better you will be able to find ways to help conserve it.

Start by learning more about the major issues facing our shared ocean - water conservation, global warming and overfishing. Pick one of those issues, and explore further to find out how you, your family and your community can help. The Ocean Project has made it easy by gathering up the best resources on the Web for in-depth information on a range of topics. Also check out the Ocean Book of the Month for enlightening and entertaining reads.

  2. Join in January! Become a member of your local aquarium, zoo, science museum, or nature center. It's a great time of year to explore these fun and fascinating places and be dazzled by the ocean's splendor.

  3. Stay in tune with the ocean! Our ocean is constantly changing and so are the threats facing it, ocean policies, and the resources and opportunities available to help protect it. Stay in tune with the ocean by signing up for the free Blue Planet News to Use monthly e-newsletter.

  ...and three for the seas

  1. Take the Seven C's Pledge! Turn your concern into action, with a pledge to commit to ocean conservation, conserve in your home, consume consciously, challenge yourself daily, connect in your community, communicate your interests and concerns, and celebrate the ocean. Take the Seven C's Pledge today!

  2. Sign the World Ocean Day Petition!

Help inspire others to take action by persuading the United Nations to officially designate June 8 as World Ocean Day.

For many years, The Ocean Project has been working with the World Ocean Network on World Ocean Day events and activities at aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools and businesses. Yet this day is yet to be officially recognized. Let's make it official - Sign the petition today!

  3. Mark the ocean on your calendar. Take your calendar for the new year, go to each month and mark down at least one thing you will do at that time to help our ocean.

The possibilities are endless - you could switch to ocean friendly household cleaners; commit to taking public transport, biking, walking, or carpooling to work; write a letter to the local paper; seek out sustainable seafood and local produce; and more - visit our Seas the Day pages or our Seas the Day calendar to get more great ideas. Or, if you would like some fun and inspiring reminders, sign up for the Seas the Day Personal Action Tips, a free electronic posting that comes out the first week of each month!
