Seas the Day in March – Green Transportation Choices

”Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.”
-Steven Wright

“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.”
-H. G. Wells

“Life is a journey, not a destination.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

This month let’s focus on the journey and not the destination. In our current world, getting to different places take a lot of energy and a good deal of that comes from fossil fuels. Cars, planes, and other machines that run on fossil fuels may get us to new places, but they are aiding climate change as they do. This hurts the whole world, from migrating birds to coral reefs and other ocean animals. We can help by traveling in more environmentally friendly ways!

Jump in a (car)pool.

It’s easy to reduce emissions if people reduce the amount of cars on the road. If you’re going to the same place as someone else, hitch a ride! You’ll not only save the environment but it will be cheaper as well! Looking for people to travel with? You can go to sites like carpoolworld and ridejoy, to find people to ride with.

Take public transit.

Just like carpooling, public transit reduces the amount of cars on the road at one time. Public transportation provides people without cars access to places they wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise and connects people to each other. It also reduces the USA’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons a year! For more information on the benefits of public transit visit voicesofpublictransit.org.

Bike to the beach.

Or any other destination. Bicycles are a great ocean friendly form of transportation! They don’t pollute, and have a much smaller manufacturing cost than cars. They’re also a healthy form of exercise and can let you breeze past traffic jams. Why not bike to the beach today?

Clean car choices.

If you have a car, you can make greener car choices to help the environment. Drive at the speed limit to maximize your gas mileage, since efficiency decreases greatly after 60mph. Always remember to turn your car off instead of idling. There are many strategies out there to help you drive efficiently.

The Seas the Day initiative encourages and empowers people to take ocean conservation personally. Each month, we feature a new conservation theme with ways to help so come back regularly for more ocean-helping ideas and tips!

Created mainly to support our partner ZAMs (Zoos, Aquariums, and Museums and other visitor-serving organizations involved in our growing network) in motivating conservation action, Seas the Day is for you to tailor for your own purposes. Please use any or all of the content verbatim and re-post on your own blog, social media channels, website, newsletter, etc. We have a large database of action tips and related content for you to use so let us know what’s most helpful and what other action-able types of information and resources we can provide to enhance your conservation efforts.
