Seas the Day in February – Community Connections

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
-Margaret Mead

“So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically.”
-Neil deGrasse Tyson

Seas the days of February by connecting with those around you. The ocean contains a tangled web of connections between the species living in it. They rely on each other and so do we. Our local communities can be a positive force for the entire world. Think about the connections you have with the ocean this month and work together as a community to enact change.

A community of art.

Staging a community art show can be a fun way to spend time inside during this cold month. You can create an art show with an ocean theme and collect various pieces of artwork relating to the ocean from people in the community. Maybe some of the artwork can even be made from recycled and re-purposed materials.

People visiting the art show will get informed about the ocean and perhaps become engaged with ocean conservation. Let people share their passions and connect emotionally through art.

Create a neighborhood ‘Ocean Team.’

Small scale conservation efforts can be really helpful! Why not start an ocean initiative right in your neighborhood? You can gather people together and start projects that will help the ocean. How about staging a beach cleanup? Or making the community more pedestrian friendly? You could press for more environmental education in the local schools or help businesses get greener. There are lots of ways to make your community more ocean friendly!

Quick tip: Want to organize an ocean event for your community? You can show an ocean film for everyone to enjoy.

Blue Valentines.

This Valentines Day, celebrate by making blue valentines. Use scrap paper to create cards and write facts about the ocean on them. Looking for something to do? Why not try winter bird-watching. Just make sure to bundle up!

The Seas the Day initiative encourages and empowers people to take ocean conservation personally. Each month, we feature a new conservation theme with ways to help so come back regularly for more ocean-helping ideas and tips!

Created mainly to support our partner ZAMs (Zoos, Aquariums, and Museums and other visitor-serving organizations involved in our growing network) in motivating conservation action, Seas the Day is for you to tailor for your own purposes. Please use any or all of the content verbatim and re-post on your own blog, social media channels, website, newsletter, etc. We have a large database of action tips and related content for you to use so let us know what’s most helpful and what other action-able types of information and resources we can provide to enhance your conservation efforts.
